Trading Gold Bullion

Gold bullion is a general term used to describe gold coins and bars that are very close to the changing price of gold. Gold bullion usually cost slightly over the going price for gold actually because of the cost of manufacturing costs involved with minting the coins, forming the bars and stamping the finished product. There are a number of qualifications that a bar or coin must have to be considered marketplace tradable. One quality a gold coin needs to avoid strangely enough is rarity. If a gold coin has a higher value than the going rate of gold then it can’t be considered bullion and isn’t traded on the open market. In turn bullion that earns rarity over time will be reclassified as a rare coin, and not good for trading gold! This change is good in the fact that most coins will gain value when reclassified however it reduces the market t can be sold in as it now only appeals to con collectors.

Another trait a gold coin or bar must have is for it quality to be stamped on the outside off it. Bullion bars and coins will have the quality (typically 99.999%) stamped on the front of it. Without this stamp it is not legally traded as bullion. The stamp also must have the weight of the coin or bar in Troy ounces. 1 troy ounce is equivalent to about 31 grams. A gold bar does not necessarily have to be 24 karat to be considered tradable bullion; some coins have its marked amount of gold ore plus an equivalent alloy of silver and other metals. Coin and bars like this will be slightly less then 24 karat, but can still be considered standard bullion.

The last quality bars and coins must contain to be considered real tradable bullion is for the coin or bar to come from some sort of documented collection or government coinage. The gold itself needs to be verifiable and the manufacturer or minter must have an international reputation for the individual coins or bars to be traded outside the US. The next time you invest in gold coins make sure you do your homework and check with some of the coin chops in your area to see what run of coins is frequently purchased in there area. This allows you to have a few short term selling options should the need arise.

Investing in gold Bullion bars and coins is a great way to keep a stable, liquid asset that has the potential for some pretty substantial market growth. By understanding what bullion actually is, you’ll have a good base of knowledge o hedge your gold investments into more aggressive options trades.
